The10th largest school system in the state of North Carolina, with 34 accredited schools and student enrollment at 24,700.

The student-teacher ratio in grades K-2 is 1:21, grades 3-9 is 1:26 and grades 10-12 is 1:29.

New Hanover county high schools average SAT score in 2005 was 1,025, compared to North Carolina's average of 1,010.

New Hanover County schools offer advanced placement and honor courses for high school students. With programs such as AVID (Achievement Via Individual Determination) and SAGE (Soaring Achievement, Great Expectations), a program for the intellectually gifted students, there are opportunities for students at all levels.

Universities/Colleges

University of North Carolina at Wilmington
With student enrollment close to 12,000, and a faculty and staff of nearly 904, UNCW has a significant positive impact on the economic and cultural climate of the area.

UNCW offers 73 bachelor's degree programs and 27 graduate programs, including a PhD in Marine Biology, one of only three such programs offered on the East coast.

Part of the UNC system, UNCW has the 4th highest freshman SAT's (1150) and the 3rd highest freshman retention rate (85.7%) in the system. For the ninth year, UNCW was ranked seventh among the top public master's universities in the South by U.S.News & World Report. Among both public and private institutions in the South, UNCW is 20th out of 127 institutions.

Enrollment for 2006 is 11,848 including 1,998 freshman. The Seahawks field 19 varsity athletic teams for men and women.

Cape Fear Community College
CFCC is one of the fastest growing community colleges in North Carolina providing workforce training through trade, technical and college transfer programs, full-time and part-time. Cape Fear's primary campus is located downtown along the scenic Cape Fear River Serving over 27,000 students yearly CFCC offers 60 technical and vocational fields, along with popular college transfer programs.
