Soccer
The Cape Fear Soccer Association (CFSA) is the leading organization in southeastern North Carolina and the second-largest organization in the state, with 347 teams and 4,200 players participating in several divisions. Emphasis is placed on the development of soccer skills, good sportsmanship and enjoyment of the game. Divisions for players ages 4 to 8 are non-competitive, while teams of 9 years and older keep scores and standings. There are 3 different divisions for teams: Recreational, comprised of teams that are formed based on neighborhoods; Challenge, comprised of teams from the southeastern North Carolina counties who train with professional coaches twice a week in structured format; and Classic, the most competitive level offered in the youth league, where teams practice three times a week with professional coaches and travel throughout the state to compete in games and tournaments. Both Challenge and Classic leagues hold tryouts in May to determine teams. Registration for the recreational league is in May for the fall season and in December for the spring season. Adults may play soccer too, with recreational and competitive amateur adult leagues available. The A-Premier league is the most competitive league and is open to males and females ages 19 to 50-plus who have experience on high school, college, and/or professional levels. Players who wish to play on a less competitive level can join A-Open. CFSA hosts three youth and two adult tournaments each year. Soccer is a sport that can be enjoyed by all participants, regardless of developmental level. Top Soccer, a special-needs soccer league, is open to anyone who is physically or mentally challenged. Being part of a team builds esteem and confidence, which is especially beneficial to challenged individuals. Teams practice once a week and play on Sundays.
